THE PROBLEM

HIGH FIRST-ATTEMPT FAILURE RATES

The current technique is highly unpredictable and requires significant guesswork. Currently, the physician uses a palpation technique to feel for the vertebrae in order to guess where to insert the needle. This technique has high first-attempt failure rates and often requires multiple attempts in order to properly place the needle.

CAUSES UNNECESSARY PAIN TO PATIENTS

Requiring multiple attempts to properly place the needle results in higher risk of complications and readmissions, and is extremely painful to the patients. Anywhere between 20-70% of patients suffer debilitating Post Lumbar Puncture Headaches and of those 15-30% return for treatment. The undue pain of undergoing several needle insertions can also lead to negative patient satisfaction scores, a criteria that affects hospitals’ ability to capture up to 2% of at-risk Medicare reimbursement. 

CAUSES PHYSICIAN FRUSTRATION

The unpredictable nature of this procedures results in significant physician frustration. In addition to the challenge of properly placing the spinal needle, measuring the opening pressure and collecting the spinal fluid add additional inconveniences for the physician. These are unnecessarily difficult processes due to the outdated and cumbersome equipment used today. Currently, physicians use manometers to measure the pressure, which are inaccurate 20% of the time and are difficult to handle.

CREATES ER BOTTLENECK 

This procedure can take anywhere from 20 mins to 2 hours depending on the difficulty of the case, with over 45% of cases being sent to radiology to have the procedure done under x-ray guidance, exposing the patient to unnecessary radiation and wasting time and resources. The uncertainty of the procedure time results in these cases being deprioritized in the ER, causing a delay in treatment and resulting in patients occupying valuable beds for hours at a time.

IntuiTap is the world’s first device designed for spinal punctures that integrates imaging of the spine with needle guidance and analytics to help physicians get where they need to go on the first try. 

ENHANCED PALPATION

IntuiTap improves upon the current procedure by enhancing palpation using our proprietary imaging technology, that when placed up against the patient's back, can detect the underlying vertebrae even through multiple layers of soft tissue. A real-time image of the underlying bones is constructed and displayed conveniently on the LCD screen attached to the handheld device. 

PREDICTIVE ANALYTICS & NEEDLE GUIDANCE

Our predictive algorithm projects onto the screen exactly where the needle will end up if inserted at that location, allowing the physician to visualize precisely where they need to insert the needle for optimal success. Additionally, our incorporated needle guide helps the physician advance the needle at a consistent angle, greatly improving their chance of success.

DIGITAL PRESSURE MEASUREMENT

A digital pressure sensor incorporated into the device provides confirmation that the physician is in the right place, and accurately measures the opening pressure, eliminating the need for a cumbersome and inaccurate manometer.
